Ryder Cup 2023: Day One

Updated: Sep 30, 2023

"One Molinari, there's only one Molinari..."

Be in no doubt.

Spectating at major sporting events does demand that you put a shift in.

And you do well to include some logistics and transport expertise amongst your travelling companions.

The first group out at this year's Ryder Cup were teeing off at 07:30.

With a travel time of 2 hours to get into the venue, we were awake at 03.45, out the door by 4.15 and on a night bus by 04.45.

Long story short...bus, metro and another bus got us to the golf course by 06:30.

And by 07:15 we had acquired a vantage point by the first tee.

To be honest this was the bit I'd most been looking forward to.

All sports and events have their iconic, signature moments.

And in recent years, at the Ryder Cup, that means revelling in the raucous atmosphere around the first tee as the players start their rounds.

It didn't disappoint.

It's something I'll remember forever. An incredibly joyous, friendly, yet hugely, and necessarily, partisan affair. God only knows how the players get the ball off the tee in such a cauldron of sound!

John Rahm was first up for Europe and hit his drive to the same spot we'd seen in practice yesterday.

Tyrell Hatton then followed this up with a good iron shot to the middle of the green. (very 'commercial' as Mr Shoesmith would say).

The crowd around us broke into a chorus of "Nice one Tyrell, nice one son, nice one Tyrell, let's have another one..."

We watched on the big screen as Sam Burns hit out of the rough, and came up short of the green...and then Scotty Scheffler nearly holed the subsequent chip, lipping out!

It hadn't taken long to start getting good!

And it got even better when Viktor Hovland, in the second match, chipped across the first green and holed it!

More golfing gold from the Spaniard and the Norwegian soon followed.

Rahm holed a putt from off the green at the third to put Europe ahead in the first match.

Viktor then holed a putt across the second green and, seconds later, Ricky Fowler missed a putt to halve the hole.

He should have made it.

It was shorter than Brian Harman.

A short while later, as breakfast rolls are being consumed, we watch as Rahm nearly holes his tee shot at the seventh hole.

Loud cheers ring out around the course.

And so it goes...Europe dominate the US all morning.

A record 4-0 haul from the opening session.

We make our way back to the first tee just after noon to watch the better ball pairings commence battle.

Across from our position we spot Ray and the STRAKA boys...today bedecked in European blue and gold.

The Americans finally put some red on the board in the afternoon...but only temporarily.

They let three matches evade their grasp on the last hole!

By the time Justin Rose holes an 8 footer for a half point, Europe have secured a 6.5 -1.5 lead.

It's the first time the Americans haven't won a single match on the opening day!

What do we put that down to? Well a number of factors, no doubt, and one of those must be the statistical data, identifying optimum partnerships and format performance, produced by one of Luke's Vice-Captain's - Eduardo Molinari.

The team must be delighted with Eduardo's positive, almost prescient, influence upon selection and strategy.

And the crowd are too. Whenever he appears there is a spontaneous burst of

"One Molinari, there's only one Molinari.

One Molina-a-ri,

There's only one Molinari"

The irony in the refrain won't be lost on most of you but, for the benefit of all, Eduardo is the brother of Francesco.

Both former Ryder Cup participants and two of Italy's finest ever golfers.

I'm sure a rendition of "Two Molinaris..." is on the cards if Europe win this weekend.

Let's hope so.

And so to tomorrow...

The morning matches will line up as follows:

Mcllroy & Fleetwood vs Thomas and Speith

Hovland & Aberg vs Scheffler & Koepka

Lowry & Straka vs Homa & Harman

Rahm & Hatton vs Cantlay & Schauffele

The US will need to start the fightback early doors...
