Ryder Cup 2023: Day Two

So let's take a breath after yesterday's events shall we.

Yes the plucky Europeans went to bed on a five point lead but we don't want to get ahead of ourselves...

Plenty of golf still to come and the American team, so strong that Tony Finau couldn't get in the side, are bound to light up proceedings on Day Two.

Or so we thought...

We get to the course just after 07:30.

A few minutes later Europe are one up in the opening match.

We decide to take to a stand for the first time and find a place near the back row overlooking the 8th Green.

By the time we've eaten breakfast it's not long before the first group is approaching the green...McIlroy and Fleetwood vs Thomas and Speith.

Speith, so far, is having a desperate time at this Ryder Cup. He just can't seem to find a fairway and in foursomes that means he keeps putting Thomas in some nasty places. They're both grinders though and will give it their all against Rory and Tommy. And so it proves at this hole with Jordan hitting a wedge close, and Justin sinking the putt for a win.

That takes the Americans back to 2 down - they lost the first three holes of this match.

In the match behind, it's hard to believe the score-line.

Viktor Hovland and Ludvig Aberg are five up after six holes.

Who are they playing?!!

The world number one Scotty Scheffler, and five time major winner, Brooks Koepka.

By the time the players walk off the Eighth green in front of us Europe are six up in the match.

Lowry and Straka vs Homa and Harman is the next match to reach us. The Americans win the hole and go one up in the match...a splash of red on the score boards.

In the final match of the morning Hatton and Rahm are up against Cantlay and Shauffele,

Hatton sinks a putt for birdie and a win - 'Nice one Tyrell'.

Europe go three up in the bottom match.

And as the applause is still ringing around the stand for Hatton and Rahm we glance across at the score board. Hovland and Aberg have just won the ninth hole - they're now seven up!

I'm starting to get a few texts and messages from home, people watching on the tv also enjoying another great start to a session by Europe. It's a slightly odd atmosphere without the anticipated American fight back...so far. It will no doubt come but at this stage in proceedings they just don't look anywhere near as up for this as the Europeans.

With the action all through our location, the stand empties. No sooner are we walking away to find another coffee truck than there's another roar...Eight up in the second match...

...and when we have finally got a coffee in our hands, the second match is over.

Hovland and Aberg have won Nine Up at the Eleventh hole - wow!

The scoreboards flash up that this is the biggest foursomes win in Ryder Cup history, by either side.

Aberg, who looked understandably nervous during his open match yesterday, is clearly a lot more relaxed about things now!

So far his Ryder Cup record is played two won two.

Of the 26 holes he's played he's won fifteen, halved nine and lost two.

Jacob speculates: "Even Adrian Meronk must be watching this and thinking fair enough".

We pitch up at the 16th green and watch the action on the big screen.

At 11:15 Homa chips in at the 15th hole to give the Americans their first win of the weekend.

A bit later, at the 7th hole, Rahm almost aces it!! A conceded birdie. And when Xander misses a putt he never liked the look of...the morning session is over 3-1 to the Europeans, and the overall score at 9.5 to 2.5.

Europe now lead by seven.

There's a bit of hiatus before the afternoon pairings are announced:

Hovland & Aberg vs Burns & Morikawa

Fleetwood & Hojgaard vs Homa & Harman

Rose & McIntyre vs Thomas & Speith

Fitzpatrick & McIlroy vs Cantlay & Clark

The selections mean that Europe will have played all their players each day.

America have almost done the same, with the exception that Ricky Fowler doesn't get a game today...

We head down towards the back of the first and eighteenth fairways and take a couple of photo opportunities that present themselves...

...well you always bump into some one you know right? But someone that all of us knows...that's pretty random...

The marshall is Dave Whatley, ex-Eastbourne Downs member, Jacob's former driving instructor, and a member of Lauren's hockey club. He was having a ball, over for a few days biking before and after the golf with an ex-army pal.

When the action starts in the afternoon we wander up to the back of the first green. There's a sing-off in full swing...

"We're the left side, we're the left side, we're the left side of the green"

Responded to by those in the stand...

"We're the middle, we're the middle, we're the middle of the green..."

...."We're the right side, we're the right side...."

And so it goes for a good five minutes.

About an hour into the afternoon session the challenge of watching a Ryder Cup out on the course has never been more evident.

It's scorching hot, there are only four matches on the course and only so many shaded viewing spots from which to view the action...

As the afternoon unfolds, the Americans finally come good.

They win three of the fourball matches the last of which finishes in the dark with a Cantlay birdie on the 18th to win.

There's a bit of controversy involving Cantlay's caddie and McIlroy, which spills over to the players car park a little later on...but fair play 'no hat' Cantlay (apparently he doesn't like the fit) birdies the last three holes to turn this last match around.

It has echoes of Poulter's display in the Saturday fourballs at Medina in 2012...

Is Cantlay going to prove to be the US Postman Pat?

And so to the final day...

Here's how it all shapes up...

Europe need four more points to win the Ryder Cup.

McIlroy is in the fourth match...

I wonder.
